WATCH: United Nations ‘Orange the World’ in Iran
On December 10, 2022, Senator Omidvar participated in a panel discussion hosted by the European Union’s diplomatic community in Toronto, the Diaspora Film Festival, and the Iranian community. Fellow panelists included:
- Ali Ehsassi, Member of Parliament for Willowdale and Chair of the Standing Committee of Foreign Affairs and International Development
- Charmaine Williams, Member of Provincial Parliament for Brampton Centre and Associate Minister of Women’s Social and Economic Opportunity in Ontario
- Nazanin Afshin-Jam, International human rights activist and President and co-founder of Stop Child Executions
- Ramin Jahanbegloo, Iranian-Canadian philosopher and academic
- Nazenin Ansari, Managing Editor of Kayhan-London and Kayhan-Life publications
The conversation was moderated by Tina Yazdani. The speakers discussed violence against women in Iran and what can be done by other democracies in the world in the context of the current Iranian regime.
The panel discussion was followed by the screening of Nasrin, a documentary directed by Jeff Kaufman. It is a secretly filmed personal portrait of Iranian human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh, who has since been sentenced to 38 years in prison and 148 lashes.
