Respect for Diversity and Inclusion of Migrants in Germany
After welcoming an unprecedented number of refugees and migrants from crises around the world in 2015 and 2016, Germany is working to promote the positive integration and long term success of those migrants. At the same time, waves of populism and right-wing extremism have been felt not only in Germany, but across Europe. Understandably, questions of equal rights, social cohesion, open societies, and respect for diversity are top of mind for many Germans. Canada’s experiences with multiculturalism can help shed light on the way forward.
An eager crowd filled the seats of the large auditorium at the Canadian Embassy in Berlin. Colourful posters lined the walls, showcasing pieces of art that have sprung from Canada’s culturally diverse society. The crowd was gathered to learn about Canada and Germany’s experiences with migration and diversity from German sociologist Aladin El-Mafaalani and Canadian Senator Ratna Omidvar.
