News Release: Senator Omidvar Applauds the Government of Canada on Designating IRGC as a Terrorist Organization

Ottawa, June 20, 2024

Senator Ratna Omidvar applauds the Government of Canada decision to officially designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. This pivotal decision follows the motion she presented in the Senate, which passed last year, that called for this essential action to address the IRGC’s extensive record of human rights abuses and support for global terrorism.

“I commend the Canadian government for its decisive action. Designating the IRGC as a terrorist organization is essential because it systematically engages in severe human rights abuses, supports global terrorism, and poses a significant threat to international peace and security,” said Senator Omidvar.

For over four decades, the IRGC has terrorized the people of Iran, using extreme measures to silence dissent and maintain control. Reports from human rights organizations have documented horrific acts of violence, including the murder of civilians, torture, and sexual assault.

The IRGC’s harmful influence extends far beyond Iran’s borders, contributing to global instability. Its support for terrorist organizations, like Hezbollah, as well as its provision of drones to Russia for use in the invasion of Ukraine, highlight the urgent need for action. The tragic downing of Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752, which claimed the lives of 176 people, including 55 Canadian citizens, further underscores the IRGC’s threat to global security.

By listing the IRGC as a terrorist organization, Canada joins allies, such as the United States, in taking a firm stand against the regime. This designation allows for the imposition of sanctions, travel bans, and the freezing of assets associated with the IRGC, thereby curtailing its ability to operate and fund its activities.

“Canada stands in solidarity with the Iranian people, particularly the brave women fighting for their rights. This designation is a testament to Canada’s commitment to human rights, international peace, and the fight against terrorism,” said Senator Omidvar.
