Moving Forward – Bill C-344, Community Benefits
I had a very long and challenging year sponsoring Bill C-344, legislation that would introduce additional economic, physical and social benefits to local communities through federal infrastructure procurement. With great support from civil society and my colleagues in the Independent Senators Group, the bill looked poised to move forward. However, due to Senate procedural delays, the bill stalled and will die on the order paper once the federal election is called. Undeterred, I was able to work with Minister Qualtrough, Minister for Public Services and Procurement Canada, to implement community benefits in federal procurement policy.
