In May 2018, Senator Ratna Omidvar participated in an event at the Center for Global Development in Washington D.C. as it launched the first report of their new Migration, Displacement and Humanitarian Policy Program. Below you will find a description of her panel along with a video highlighting the conversation.
Michael Clemens and his panelists discussed the current landscape of migration policy, the Global Compact for Migration, and important policy innovations Member States should draw on as they seek to implement better migration policy. What challenges are countries facing in regular and irregular migration that smart policy choices can effectively tackle, for the mutual benefit of origin and destination countries? They also underscored the idea that there is no inherent effect of migration—it is policy choices that determine whether migration’s effects are positive or negative.
